Chronology of Events

1912

Request of Archbishop Aelen to open a College in Madras in February.

1924

Foundation stone laid on 10th March, by His Excellency Willingdon, Governor of Madras.

1925

College begins with 75 students enrolled in first year B.A., Economics, History and B.Sc. Mathematics.
Three hostel blocks were constructed.

1926

Establishment of the Departments of Physics and Chemistry. 300 students on roll.

1927

Commencement of the first year Honours in Mathematics and Economics. 503 students now enrolled.
Closure of B.A. (History).

1929

College has Eleven hostel blocks.

1930

Construction of the College Church begins.

1932

Blessing of the College Church by Most Rev. Fr. E. Mederlet, D.D, S.C., Archbishop.

1933

Annexes built for the Department of Physics.

1937

Introduction of Oriental languages (Hindi, Telugu, Sanskrit)

1942

Strength of the College increased to 1387. Introduction of Hindi and French in Part III of B.A.
Re-introduction of Latin, Botany and Zoology in the B.Sc., B.Com. (Honours) &
B.Sc (Honours) in Chemistry, Another storey added to the Jesuit Residence. Two new blocks
of 3 storeys each, added to the College Hostel. Construction of the Chemistry Block.

1945

B.Com. introduced.

1948

Establishment of Department of Botany and Natural Sciences.

1949

Publication of the first research paper in the Department of Zoology. B.A. French commences.

1950

Commencement of the Silver Jubilee celebration on 27th October. Dept. of Economics introduces
PG course. Introduction of B.Sc. (Botany). Inauguration of Bertram Hall.

1951

Student population stands at 1800.

1952

Two more hostel blocks, new mess rooms, a store cum dispensary and a temporary indoor games
building set up. Construction of 40 houses, in two quarters, towards the corners of the College for
the non-teaching staff.

1954

Establishment of the Institute of Social Science a offering a Diploma in Social Work.
Cardinal Gracias
presides over the College Day functions.

1956

Introduction of PUC after an initial hesitation. Homage paid to St. Ignatius of Loyola on his 400th death anniversary. Addition of a block with 15 rooms to the Jesuit residence. Construction of the
teaching staff quarters. Shedding of Intermediate in Arts & Sciences.

1957

B.Sc. Zoology course commences. Revival of B.A., History. Introduction of Social Sciences.

1958

Introduction of B.A. English. Dept. of Maths, Chemistry, Commerce introduces PG course.

1959

B.Sc. Statistics course commences. Visit of Cardinal Agagianian, accompanied by Archbishop Knox.

1963

Introduction of M.A. Social Work.

1965

Establishment of Entomology Research Institute (ERI).

1967

On 20th June Visit from Rev. Fr. Pedro Arrupe, Superior General of the Society of Jesus.

1968

Introduction of German Language.

1969

Introduction of B.A. Tamil.

1970

Opening of Sauliere Hall for Hostelites on 31st July.

1971

Loyola Evening College started. The Strength of the College stands at 2500. Another floor added to
the day scholar's centre.

1972

Appointment of a full-time Counsellor.

1975

Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

1978

College granted of Autonomy.

1979

Establishment of Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA).

1980

Rev.Fr. Pedro Arrupe, Superior General of the S.J. makes another visit.

1981

M.Phil., Economics initiated. Introduction of Dept. of Foreign Languages -
French & German.

1982

M.Sc., Statistics introduced.

1983

Establishment of Loyola Institute of Visual Communication, B.A. Sociology
introduced.

1984

Introduction of M.Phil., Maths and Chemistry. Dept. of Zoology introduces PG course.

1985

M.Sc., Physics introduced.

1986

Celebration of the Diamond Jubilee on 9th October.

1987

M.Phil., Statistics, Commerce, introduced. Dept. of English introduces PG
course.

1988

M.Phil., Physics, Zoology introduced. Most Rev. Fr. G. Casimir, S.J., D.D., blesses Jerome
D'Souza Administrative Block.

1989

B.Sc., Visual Communication commences. Ph.D. in Statistics commences. M.Phil., Physics,
Economics, Social Work initiated.

1990

Construction of the new Physics department building and Computer Centre.

1991

Establishment of the Racine Research Centre in Mathematics.

1992

Inauguration of the New Physics Block. Ph.D in Physics commences. Launch of
Loyola Extension & Awareness Programme for PG students.

1993

M.A. Applied History and B.Sc. Computer Science initiated.

1995

Establishment of Loyola Institute of Frontier Energy (LIFE). First National Jesuit Alumni/ae
Congress hosted by Loyola College.

1996

Inauguration of the new building for LIBA in September. Visit of Cardinal of Lourdusamy.
Establishment of LIVE. Ph.D in Commerce commences.

1997

Celebration of the birth Centenary of Fr. Jerome D'Souza, S.J. and Silver Jubilee of Loyola
Evening College. Establishment of LISOR.

1998

Establishment of Loyola Institute for Industrial and Social Science Research. Introduction
of M.A. Philosophy.

1999

Introduction of B.B.A., M.C.A., and M.Sc. Biotechnology.

2000

Department of Botany renamed Dept. of Plant Biology and Biotechnology.
Establishment of M.Sc. Biotechnology. Introduction of B.C.A., B.A. Corporate & Secretaryship.
Dept. of Computer Science introduced for
PG (M.Sc.) Inauguration of the Platinum Jubilee Building by Rev. Fr. Peter Hons Kolvenbach, S.J.
First NAAC assesment.

2001

Restructuring of the Syllabus. Choice Based Credit System introduced for UG.

2002

Inauguration of LIFE Building. Ph.D. in English commences.

2003

Introduction of M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology & M.Sc. Visual
Communication.

2004

Restructuring of Syllabus. Choice Based Credit System introduced for PG.
Introduction of M.A. Medical Sociology and M. Sc. Biomedical Instrumentation Science. Award
of "Potential for Excellence" from UGC.

2005

Dept. of Zoology renamed as the Dept. of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology. Blessing of
new buildings "School of Media Studies" and additional floor in J.D. Block.
Loyola - Kovalam Tsunami Rehabilitation Project assisted by TATA Relief Committee -
MOU Signed; License for FM Radio granted by Ministry of Comm. & Dept. of Telecom -
Introduction of M.A. (Media Arts) and MSW (SS). Inauguration of IDCR & Loyola FM Radio.

2006

M.C.A. becoming Autonomous. Restructuring phase II for UG implemented. Introduction of
M.A. (Media Arts) & M.Phil. (History).
Inauguration of :
- Resource Center for Differently Abled Students
- Digital Library
- Loyola Health Centre
- School of Physical Science
Introduction of M.Sc. Industrial Biotechnology Management and B.B.A,
Lille Catholic University, France.
Reaccredited at A+ Level by NAAC.

2007

Renovation of the 75 years old College Church.
Guest Rooms & IOB, Loyola Branch in New Premises - M.Phil. Courses restructured -
Introudction of M.Phil., and Establishment of Ph.D., in Plantbiology and Biotechnology.
