Inauguration (2011-2012) Report


The Department commenced as the Department of French in 1925. In 1966 German was started. In 1981 both the departments were clubbed together and the Foreign Languages Department was born. Now we teach French, German. While for French there are over 1000 students in various courses, for German there are about 100 students.


The Department is known for training students in research leading to Ph.D.

Syllabus

Department of Foreign Languages offered:
• B. A. French, with German and Tourism.
• Ph.D in French
• First language courses
• Spoken French
• French for computers
• History of European Literature (for B. A. Eng. Lit.)
• French for Business (for B. Com)
• French for Science
• French for Tourism
• German for Tourism


Facilities:

• Computer with multimedia and Internet.
• TV, VCR, DVD player
• Tape-recorders, Laptop
• Well-equipped Departmental library
• French and Italians on the faculty as volunteers.


Specialities :

  •   Almost all the teachers have been trained in France/Germany / Italy…
  •   We have an MOU with Institut Albert le Grand for staff/student exchange and already 4 teachers have had their training at Angers, France. Negotiations are on for an MOU with the Catholic University of Lille.
  •   We offer useful inter-departmental courses: History of European Literature, French for Business, French for Tourism…


Extension Services :

  •   The 31st National Congress of the Indian Association of Teachers of French was held in Loyola College in 2000.
  •   The Department has organized several regional and national seminars for French teachers and trained school teachers through week-end programs at the University of Madras.
  • Dr. Xavier Raj and Dr. Rebecca George along with other professors have published a dictionary in French.
  •    Dr. Xavier Raj and Prof. K. Candassamy have authored books and written articles in journals.
  • Dr. Rebecca George, Dr. Krishnaveni, Prof. Abarna Roy, Prof. Durga Devi and Prof. Louisette have published articles.
  • With the help of the French Embassy in India, the Emmanuel Community of France and the Foreign Missionary Society of Paris, many teachers and students have been able to visit and study in France.
