HISTORY AND PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT

It was established as an under-graduate department in the year 1959. In the year 1982, the department was upgraded into a post-graduate department with the introduction of M.Sc.(Statistics) programme. In rapid succession, the department advanced further to a research department with the introduction of M.Phil. Programme in 1985 and Ph.D. program in 1988. It has been produced many outstanding students who have secured university ranks.

Though equipped with just five faculty members before the affiliation of the M.Sc. Programme, the department had grew leaps and bounds to reach the current strength of 14. Of these, all the permanent faculty members totaling 11 possess a doctoral degree while the rest have a M.Phil an degree.

The faculty of the department serve various other departments by way of teaching allied and elective courses and providing consultancy services.

Another major highlight is the recent initiation of the Industry Institute Interaction (I.I.I.) a tie-up to train final year UG students.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

The curriculum is periodically updated keeping in mind the latest advances in the field of Statistics. It aims at providing students a strong theoretical foundation in Statistics in par with the reputed international institutions and at the same time, emphasizing application oriented subjects in Statistics and Information Technology.

Students are encouraged to do mini-projects involving computer-based statistical analysis. In some courses at the P.G. level, students are encouraged to give classroom presentation of chosen topics. At the UG level, under the restructured pattern, the final year students have the benefit of being trained under the I.I.I. programme mentioned earlier.

In a nutshell, our curriculum is comparable with those of the top national and international universities.

SYLLABUS

The syllabi at B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.Phil levels are designed in such a way that the students gain a strong foundation in the theory of Statistics and its applications. Our students have the unique opportunity, unlike their counterparts in many other colleges, of studying subjects like stochastic processes, Reliability theory and Econometrics at UG level itself. Courses titled “Statistical Mathematics-I ”and “Statistical Mathematics-II ” are unique in their syllabi. These papers introduce concepts from Mathematics and discuss their corresponding applications in Statistics. It seems that there are very few college/universities in India offering such periodically upgraded courses. At postgraduate and M.Phil. levels some of the research findings of the faculty members have been incorporated in the curriculum.

INNOVATIONS IN TEACHING

Although to a large extent chalk and talk method is practiced, attempts have been made to go modern in teaching. This is carried out by availing the use of OHP and computers. Topics are given to the students for seminar presentation wherein the students are motivated with self-learning and shared-learning.

Remedial teaching is done for the benefit of academically weaker students. Another unique feature of the department is outside-class interaction between students and teachers beyond the class hours. These innovations in teaching have been very well received by all the students.

For the evaluation of the student’s progress, internal assessment tests and end semester examinations are conducted. In addition, seminars, quizzes, problem-solving sessions, projects, and on-the-spot assessment are conducted. The mode of evaluation is left to the discretion of the course teacher.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The faculty members are actively engaged in research and have so far published more than 100 articles in reputed national and international journals and continue to publish about five articles on an average every year. A senior professor has been awarded Emeritus Fellowship by UGC. Some faculty members went abroad for teaching and on consultancy assignments .A few of the faculty have been awarded minor projects by UGC. Some members have authored textbooks, which were published by reputed publishers.

The books authored by the faculty members are given below:

  1. FORTRAN Programming
  2. Sampling Theory and Methods

Currently four research scholars are working for their Ph.D. and eight scholars are working for their M.Phil degree. A major highlight of the quality and quantity of the research being pursued in the department is that the faculty members have so far been awarded the annual research award (Rev.Fr.Yeddanapally Research award) seven times since the award was instituted.

STUDENT PLACEMENT

Students who seek jobs after undergoing the UG course in the department find placement as statistical investigators, programmers, computer consultants, sales executives and statisticians in quality control Depts. of industries. Some pursue postgraduate and higher studies in institutions like IIT, ISI and in reputed Universities abroad.

Those who complete the PG course are placed as executives in companies, teachers in colleges and schools and statistical consultants and also secure assignments abroad.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Many faculty members of the department serve as Resource Persons in Refresher Courses in Statistics conducted by various Universities. Some members are invited as speakers in National and International seminars. They are also invited to give guest lectures and Endowment Lectures for PG / Research students of other institutions.
