International Relations

Co-ordinator's Message

The Department of International Relations (IR) at Loyola College (Autonomous) was established in 2021. In alignment with the institution's commitment to shaping progressive and socially responsible citizens, the Master's Programme in International Relations aims to integrate students from different backgrounds into a graduate programme that provides scope to analyse international relations through different prisms of their academic experience and expertise. This background will build an interdisciplinary understanding of the purpose of nations, relationships between countries, international organisations, and its institution. International Relations (IR) may be an offshoot of political science, but this field of study is exceptionally in-depth in its own right. As global society evolves and expands, International Relations will continue to adapt to the changes through explorations and discover exciting ways to link the complex world.

The Master's programme comprising four semesters is designed
- to  equip  the learners with a holistic understanding of methodologies for the study of Global Affairs,
  • to  offer  learners a comprehensive and critical understanding of theories of International Relations, their inherent nature as an interdisciplinary study, and
  • to  encourage  a critical appreciation of the essentially contested nature of politics in general and international relations in particular
This course would attempt to establish collaborative relationships for exchange, study, research with policy think-tanks working in the areas of foreign policy, defence and strategic studies, and other think-tanks, which are country-specific and context-specific. International Relations is a popular subject. The globalized world demands youngsters with multiple skills, which International Relations (IR) with the multi-/inter-disciplinary approach prepares for careers in Diplomacy, Public Policy, International Law, International Human Rights Law and International and National Think-Tanks.

In her aspiration to be a major global player, India's rise as a responsible state and her achievements in the international arena have been remarkable. The MA programme envisages contributing to the expansion and enhancement of Indian scholarship in the International Relations discipline on par with international universities to encourage intellectually driven contributions.
